Recognising the critical need to grow and being able to harvest a sustainable pipeline of indigenous R&D talent for defence, DSO, together with DSTA, mooted the idea of the Young Defence Scientists Programme (YDSP) in 1992.

Since then, the two organisations have built upon and strengthened YDSP as the key programme to outreach to top young talent between the ages of 15 and 16.

To kindle their interest in Science and Technology, YDSP offers an interesting array of activities to cater to our youth's wide-ranging palates. These range from a series of engaging lectures (World of Science), immersive and practical research projects in a real laboratory environment (Research@YDSP), to camps designed to whet students' appetites for defence science and technology (YDSP Science & Technology Camp).

This year marks the third year running of the YDSP Congress - a platform where selected students are awarded for their outstanding academic performance in Science, Physics and Mathematics, as well as for all YDSP student participants to showcase the YDSP activities and projects that they have participated in over the past 12 months.

The event, held at the Orchard Hotel on 16 March 2009, was well attended by proud parents, teachers and principals of participating students; DSO and DSTA staff; and YDSP’s partner organisations, such as the universities and research institutes.

In his speech, guest-of-honour DPM and Minister for Defence Mr Teo Chee Hean, underscored the importance of grooming our own scientists and engineers that can provide technological customisation to the SAF’s unique requirements.

He told the students present, “Defence engineering and research and development requires talented individuals like yourselves who have the intellect, dedication and passion to pursue possibilities and break new ground. If you are excited by what you have seen, and are looking for a challenging career, I hope that one day, you will join MINDEF and contribute to the defence and security of Singapore.”
